Increasing Demographic Diversity

February 12, 2020

The gender and ethnic demographic diversity of our existing Administration and Planning (A&P) workforce is reflected in our diversity dashboard, as is the gender and ethnic diversity of The Ohio State University community that we serve (faculty, staff, student employees).

A&P is working to increase the demographic diversity as a whole by focusing on increasing underrepresented groups (females and minorities) in skilled trades and leadership positions. Skilled trades traditionally are male-dominated careers, so one strategy for increasing diversity in our applicant pools and hiring yields for skilled trades positions included the establishment of a trainee program to bridge the gap from the service sector (e.g., custodial & grounds that historically has a more diverse population) to skilled trades. Another strategy for increasing diversity in the skill trades involves creating a pipeline for talent with a special focus on underrepresented groups. A&P is developing an externship pilot program with Eastland Fairfield Vocational School for students enrolled in their HVAC program. Strategies to increase the demographic diversity in leadership positions involve the implementation of a leadership development pilot program in Facilities Operations and Development, to include the identification of emerging leaders using an inclusive lens.
