Officer Cassi Shaffer of The Ohio State University Police Division is always on the go. That’s the way she’s wired. Cassi serves on the OSUPD Crisis Action Team, she’s an assigned dignitary protection officer, and she spends a bit of time on the division’s bike patrol. On certain nights, she runs OSUPD’s Community Police Academy and Rape Aggression Defense courses, which often require her to participate in scenario-based role playing.
In autumn 2016, her ability to continue in her role as an officer was suffering, causing her to question her future.
Whether it’s a job, family or money, we all face challenges that stress us out in life. James Botts, an Inventory Control Specialist with TTM, says there was a time when the ups and downs of life pushed him to the limit.
That’s when he committed to living a healthy lifestyle and learning to channel his energy.
“I read an article in a magazine and I started getting heavily into it,” Botts said. “I started getting books on subjects and started reading the latest literature.”
Botts started running on a regular basis but herniated a disc in...
For Tracy Palmer, Pelotonia hits close to home. Palmer, a Building Information Modeling Coordinator for PARE, is a breast cancer survivor. She was a virtual rider in the past, and when she heard about Planning, Architecture and Real Estate’s (PARE) team, decided to do it again.
“I always said this was a group (cancer survivor) that I never wanted to belong to, but now that I’m in it, it’s kind of cool,” Palmer said. “There’s just a lot of comaraderie there and support.”
Palmer says she found a lump in her breast the week that she started working...
Lucille Talbert puckers her lips and shakes her head thinking about the way her body appeared in early 2015.
“I didn’t like myself. I didn’t like how I looked.”
Lucy, as her coworkers call her, works as a first-shift custodian, looking after Derby Hall right off The Oval. Each day when reporting to and from work, Lucy travels past the Baker Systems Engineering Building and Dreese Hall. Both buildings have reflective windows that never fail to give her a full view of her body.
“I began to look at myself and said I’m gaining too much weight....
When lunchtime rolls around on a work day, it’s often easy to drive to the nearest fast food restaurant or even grab something from the vending machine, but employees from Facilities Operations and Development’s Design and Construction (FDC) group are offering a healthy alternative through a new lunch program.
It’s called the Healthy Lunch Club, providing a welcome, nutritious variety to your lunch menus and a chance to connect socially.
Alex Cramer, the club’s founder, is an FDC Contracts Administrator and a Buckeye Wellness Innovator. They promote university-wide wellness initiatives. A couple months ago, Cramer met with A&P...
Living a healthy lifestyle is always on Margaret Bussard’s mind. In the last five years, the Department of Public Safety Administrative Services Manager has lost four siblings to adult-onset Muscular Dystrophy. She says she is lucky to not have the gene sequence, but unfortunately has watched the health of her siblings decline rapidly.
“I know that the older I get, the slower I get,” Bussard said. “If I don’t keep moving, then I won’t keep moving. So, it’s important to me to look at my wellness and be aware of what I can do to improve it.”
There’s nothing more heartbreaking than seeing a loved one battle a life-threatening disease. Kathleen Hall’s father had a stroke a couple of years ago. Now this A&P employee strives to make living a healthy lifestyle more of a priority.
“It’s become more important to me to be aware of whole-self and heart health,” Hall said.
When Hall recently started working in A&P as an HR Administrative Associate, she saw an advertisement for a program called, “Give Biofeedback a Try.” It’s a half-hour session that helps people manage stress and build resilience through monitoring breathing patterns with biofeedback technology....
We’ve all thought at one point or another that we would exercise more if we had more time. Now, two WOSU staff members have started an exercise program that covets convenience.
Cindy Gaillard, Director of Local Content, and Ann Fisher, Executive Producer and Host of “All Sides with Ann Fisher,” launched the program in October.
Fisher came up with the idea after connecting with a voice coach from NPR. “We worked on breathing techniques and we did a lot of yoga-type moves during the session,” Fisher said.
Mike Thompson, Chief Content Director for News and Public Affairs at WOSU Public Media, might best be known for his role as host of “ Columbus on the Record ,” a weekly half-hour television talk show dedicated to Ohio politics on WOSU-TV. Not commonly discussed on the record, Mike’s dedication as a long-distance runner.
When not on TV, Mike might be seen running along the Olentangy River Trail. A few times a week, he takes an hour at lunch to get in a 4- to 5-mile run.
Food is the fuel that drives the life of Meg Schneider, marketing coordinator in Administration and Planning Marketing and Communications. Without the proper nourishment, creating graphics and promotional materials for the A&P departments would be a much tougher task. It wasn’t until college that Meg realized the importance of what she feeds her body.
Meg grew up in Toledo, Ohio, the youngest of five children. Her father was the son of a butcher and her mother grew up on a farm, so there wasn’t any lack for knowledge of nutrition.
With seven members of the immediate family, the...
